Search Marketing FAQ

AI Visibility, SEO & PPC Questions.

Straightforward answers to common questions about ChatGPT visibility, Google AI search, SEO, schema, website crawlability, Google Ads, and paid search.

Showing up where people are asking questions.

ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews, and other answer engines are changing how customers research businesses and make decisions.

What is AI visibility?

AI visibility describes how often your business, website, products, services, or expertise are mentioned, cited, or recommended in AI-generated answers. That can include platforms such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini, and other AI-assisted search experiences.

Unlike traditional SEO, the goal is not always a single numbered ranking. It is broader visibility across the questions, topics, comparisons, and buying decisions that matter to your customers.

How do I get my business to show up in ChatGPT?

There is no single switch that makes a company appear in ChatGPT. The foundation is making sure your website is public, crawlable, clearly structured, and filled with useful information about who you are, what you do, where you operate, and why your business is relevant to the question being asked.

Strong traditional SEO, clear service pages, useful educational content, third-party mentions, reviews, consistent business information, and allowing relevant search crawlers to access your site can all contribute to stronger visibility.

Can I rank number one in ChatGPT?

Not in the same way you rank number one in a traditional search engine. AI-generated answers can change based on the wording of the prompt, follow-up questions, user context, available sources, and the model being used.

A better goal is to increase how often your brand appears across a group of relevant questions and to make sure it is described accurately when it does appear.

How do I get my website into Google AI Overviews or AI Mode?

Google does not require a special AI optimization file or separate AI version of your website. Pages generally need to be crawlable, indexed, eligible to appear in Google Search, and useful enough to support the question being answered.

That means the same fundamentals still matter: strong technical SEO, useful original content, clear page structure, internal linking, accurate business information, good user experience, and content that directly helps people solve a problem or make a decision.

What are GEO and AEO, and are they different from SEO?

GEO usually means Generative Engine Optimization, while AEO usually means Answer Engine Optimization. Both terms describe efforts to improve visibility inside AI-generated or direct-answer search experiences.

They overlap heavily with SEO. Technical accessibility, strong content, authority, clear entities, useful answers, and trustworthy information remain important. The difference is that AI visibility often focuses more on whether a brand gets mentioned or cited across a topic rather than where one URL ranks for one keyword.

Can local businesses show up in ChatGPT and AI search results?

Yes. Local businesses can appear when AI systems answer questions about services, businesses, providers, or places in a geographic area.

Local visibility benefits from many of the same signals used elsewhere in search: an accurate website, clear service areas, strong local service pages, consistent business information, reviews, reputable third-party mentions, and an up-to-date Google Business Profile.

How do I measure AI visibility and traffic from ChatGPT?

AI search measurement is still developing, so there is no single metric that tells the whole story. A useful approach combines brand mentions across important prompts, citations, referral traffic, landing-page engagement, leads, and conversions.

ChatGPT referral links can be identified in analytics, and Google Search Console now provides reporting for visibility within Google’s generative AI search experiences. Those signals can be combined with GA4 and other reporting tools to build a more complete view.

Making your website easier to understand.

Does schema markup help with AI search visibility?

Structured data can help search engines understand specific information about a page, business, product, article, event, or other entity. It is still useful when the schema accurately matches the visible content on the page.

But schema is not a shortcut to AI visibility. Google does not require special AI schema for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and adding markup does not guarantee that a page will be cited.

Do I need FAQ schema or an llms.txt file for AI SEO?

Not for Google AI visibility. Google has stated that llms.txt is not required and does not improve visibility or rankings in Google Search. Google also retired its FAQ rich-result feature.

Rather than chasing special files or markup, focus on making your important content easy to crawl, easy to understand, factually clear, and genuinely useful to visitors.

Can ChatGPT crawl my website?

Public websites can be discovered and surfaced in ChatGPT search. OpenAI uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot for search discovery.

If OAI-SearchBot is blocked in your robots.txt file or by another security layer, it may limit OpenAI’s ability to discover and cite your content. OAI-SearchBot is separate from GPTBot, which relates to model training controls.

What kind of website content is most likely to help AI visibility?

Useful content tends to answer real customer questions clearly and add something specific rather than repeating generic information available everywhere else.

Strong examples include detailed service pages, original expertise, comparisons, pricing guidance, case studies, frequently asked questions, local information, how-to content, first-hand experience, and pages that explain a topic in enough detail to support a confident answer.

Paid search without the mystery.

What is PPC and how does Google Ads work?

PPC stands for pay-per-click. In Google Ads, advertisers can compete to show ads when people search for relevant products, services, or topics. You generally pay when someone clicks the ad.

Whether an ad appears and how it performs depends on more than the bid alone. Search intent, competition, ad relevance, landing-page experience, targeting, and other auction signals all play a role.

How much should a small business spend on Google Ads?

There is no universal monthly Google Ads budget. The right number depends on your market, average cost per click, geographic area, competition, lead value, conversion rate, and how many leads or sales you need.

A better starting point is to work backward from the business goal. Estimate what a qualified lead or sale is worth, define an acceptable acquisition cost, then build a budget capable of generating enough traffic and conversion data to make meaningful decisions.

Is PPC better than SEO, or should I use both?

PPC and SEO solve different parts of the same search problem. PPC can create immediate visibility for targeted searches, while SEO builds organic visibility that can continue producing value without paying for every click.

For many businesses, the strongest strategy uses both: paid search to capture demand now and organic search to build long-term visibility across Google and emerging AI search.

What Google Ads metrics matter most?

The most important metrics depend on the business goal, but conversions usually matter more than clicks alone. Common metrics include conversion volume, conversion rate, cost per conversion, conversion value, ROAS, click-through rate, cost per click, and search-term quality.

Quality Score can help diagnose issues with expected CTR, ad relevance, and landing-page experience, but it should not replace business metrics such as leads, sales, acquisition cost, or revenue.
